[Updated] SAMR Encourages Dairy Manufacturers to Indicate Expiration Date More Comprehensively

According to the SAMR announcement, China proposes to add best before date on the label of low temperature milk having short shelf life.

[Updated]

On Oct. 28, 2021, China SAMR issued a notice to encourage manufacturers to indicate the expiration date for refrigerated dairy products more comprehensively. Both the production date and shelf life should be indicated on the label. Expressions can be "the expiration date will be yyyy/mm/dd" or "please eat (drink) before yyyy/mm/dd". All labeling contents shall comply with the provisions in GB7718 General Standard for the Labeling of Prepackaged Foods.
According to the exposure draft unveiled by SAMR on June 4, 2021, the wording “please consume before xxxx year xx month xx day” should be indicated on the label of pasteurized milk whose shelf life is no more than 14 days and fermented milk whose shelf life is no more than 30 days (both need cold storage) starting from Oct. 1st, 2022. The best before date should be labeled clearly and prominently. Its font and other requirements should follow GB 7718-2011 General Standard for the Labeling of Prepackaged Foods.

Comments could be sent to dsyc@samr.gov.cn before July 4, 2021.
