China Releases GB/T Standard for Grape Wine (Draft Standard for Approval)

Raw and auxiliary material requirements are newly included in GB/T standard for grape wine, and limit level of methyl alcohol and sorbic acid/potassium sorbate are removed as well.

On Jun. 21, 2018, Standardization Administration of The People's Republic of China unveiled the following documents:

  • Grape wine (draft standard for approval)

  • Enamel cast iron cookware (draft standard for approval)

  • Fruit and vegetable juice and their beverage (modification list)

  • General standard for beverage (modification list)

This recently updated GB/T standard Grape Wine will replace GB/T 15037-2006. Last year in July 2017, this standard was opened to public feedback. The following lists some remarkable changes compared with the previous standard.

Technical requirements

Requirements of raw and auxiliary materials are newly included for wines, sparkling wine, liqueur wine, aromatized wine. Take wines for example, the alcoholic content of raw materials shall be no less than 7.0% vol. Substances added for raising sweetness are limited to concentrated grape juice and sugar. Additionally, added sugar should not exceed 10% of product’s total weight/volume. Besides, the limit level of methyl alcohol, requirements of sorbic acid/potassium sorbate, and hygienic requirements are all removed.

Label

The labeling requirements of prepackaged wine should refer to GB 2758 and GB 7718. Detailed name must be indicated for special wines.

Others

Terms and definition are further detailed and optimized in the latest version. Now 33 items are included in the terms and definition part, including the definition of sweet wines, carbon dioxide-containing wines etc.

Another 3 criteria are added for wine product category, which are alcohol content, special wines and sugar content (for sparkling wine).

Regarding the revision to “General Standard for Beverage” and “Fruit & Vegetable Juice and Their Beverage”, non from concentrated fruit juice (NFC) is now under the category of fruit juice.
