China to Update National Standards for Composite Food Contact Materials and Articles

The national food safety standard for composite food contact materials and articles has been revised, including the updates on the requirements for raw materials and additives, physicochemical indexes, microbiological indexes, and labeling requirements, etc.

On Jun. 16, 2017, Food Contact Science Expert Committee of China National Food Industry Association drafted the national food safety standard for composite food contact materials and articles, which is open to public consultation until Jul. 16, 2017.

This new standard will replace GB 9683-1988 Hygienic Standard for Composite Laminated Food Packaging Bag, which adds the requirements for raw materials and additives, and revises the physicochemical indexes, microbiological indexes, and labeling requirements, etc.

Compared to the previous version, the application scope of this new standard is expanded to all varieties of composite food contact materials and articles. The solvent residual limit, primary aromatic amines migration amount, migration amount of bisphenol A diglycidyl ether and its derivatives, as well as decoloring test requirements have been supplemented.

Labels of composite food contact materials and articles should comply with GB 4806.1 and other relevant standards. The substance name of each layer of packing materials should be indicated on the label sequencing from outer layer to inner layer.
