China Wine Importation Data 2016

On Feb. 9, 2017, “China Chamber of Commerce of Foodstuffs and Native Produce” released imported wine statistical data for 2016. It is reported that the aggregated import value in 2016 was USD2.364 billion, representing an increase of 16.3% compared to 2015. 

Takehome:

  • 2016 saw an increase in the total volume of wine imported in China compared to the previous year. Over the next 5 years it is predicted that China’s wine market will continue to expand and demand for imported wines will continue to increase.

It is reported that the aggregated import value in 2016 was USD2.364 billion, representing an increase of 16.3% compared to 2015. Bottled wine accounts for 93% of the total volume of imported wine, and the first three countries with the highest market share are France, Australia and Chile. France holds a dominant 44%.

In terms of the product price, the average price of wine from New Zealand is the highest, at USD 9.76 per liter, while the lowest average price is from Spain at USD 1.97 per liter. Guangdong and Shanghai are the two regions with the highest import volume, accounting for 67% of the total volume imported into China. The import volume in Guangdong Province was USD 924 million, which is almost twice the amount imported through Shanghai which is ranked second.

Imported Wine Compliance Failure Data in 2016:

According to the blacklist released by AQSIQ (please check out China AQSIQ Monthly Blacklist of Imported Foods from here), 125 batches of imported wine failed CIQ inspection and quarantine in 2016. The major reasons for failure are unqualified labeling and packaging (lacking of Chinese label, lack of ingredient information including sulfur dioxide, benzoic acid, sorbic acid, etc.), excessive amounts of iron, volatile acid and other food additives, etc.
