China's Label Filing for Imported Prepackaged Food to Be Cancelled From Oct. 1, 2019

As previously reported by Chemlinked (read CL news here), GAC has officially announced it is to cancel label filing requirements for prepackaged foods imported for the first time. Importers shall bear the major responsibility for food label regulatory compliance prior to customs release

As revealed by a GAC announcement issued on Apr. 23, 2018, label filing for prepackaged imported food will no longer be required starting on Oct.1, 2019.

Label inspection for foods imported for the first time will be regarded as a normal sampling inspection item for customs release. If a prepackaged food product is selected to undergo on-site inspection or laboratory testing, the importer is required to provide the product qualification certificate, origin label and its translation, Chinese label sample and other supporting documents.

Since Oct. 1, 2019, imported prepackaged food’s label information which was filed previously will be invalid, and the following announcements will be repealed:

  • Announcement on amending imported and exported food and cosmetic labeling inspection system (2006, No. 44 former AQSIQ announcement)

  • Announcement on imported prepackaged food labeling management system (2011, No. 59 former AQSIQ announcement)

  • Announcement on implementing imported and exported prepackaged food labeling inspection and supervision regulation (2012, No. 27 former AQSIQ announcement
