As revealed by Commission Regulation (EU) 2024/1821 issued on June 27, 2024, the EU adds iron milk caseinate as a form of iron to be used in food and food supplement manufacturing. This Regulation shall enter into force on the twentieth day following that of its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.
Revisions
Iron milk caseinate is added to Annex II to Directive 2002/46/EC on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to food supplements.
According to Article 4, Paragraph 1 of Directive 2002/46/EC, only vitamins and minerals listed in Annex I, in the forms listed in Annex II, may be used for the manufacture of food supplements. The addition to Annex II now allows iron milk caseinate to be used as a form of iron to manufacture food supplements.
Iron milk caseinate is inserted in Annex II to Regulation (EC) No 1925/2006 on the addition of vitamins and minerals and of certain other substances to foods.
Regulation (EC) No 1925/2006 does not apply to food supplements covered by Directive 2002/46/EC. Therefore, the permission of iron milk caseinate is given separately in these two regulations. Only vitamins and minerals listed in Annex I, in the forms listed in Annex II, may be added to foods after meeting certain requirements.
