As per an official news issued on June 12, 2024, the European Union (EU) has taken a major step towards banning the chemical Bisphenol A (BPA) from food contact materials, with member states having endorsed a proposal from the European Commission to prohibit the use of BPA in these products.
The decision is based on a scientific assessment by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which concluded that BPA have potential harmful effects on the immune system. However, the ban still requires formal adoption following a scrutiny period by the European Parliament and the Council.
If approved, the BPA ban would apply broadly to its use in packaging, such as coating used on metal can, reusable plastic drink bottles, other kitchenware, etc. Limited exceptions may be made where safe alternatives are unavailable, in order to avoid disruptions to the food supply chain during the transition.
As revealed by the Commission, this ban will enter into force at the end of 2024.
