FSSAI Rolls Out New Digital Tools for Consumers to Report Misleading Food Claims

FSSAI empowers consumers to report misleading claims on food products through the Food Safety Connect app or FoSCoS.

On April 30, 2025, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) launched new digital tools allowing consumers to report misleading claims on food packaging, aiming to boost consumer empowerment and food transparency. Through the Food Safety Connect mobile app and the Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS), individuals can now directly lodge complaints against false or unverified food product labels.

This development is part of FSSAI’s broader push to enforce honesty in food labelling and tighten oversight on food businesses. It builds upon existing legal frameworks such as the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulations, and the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations. These regulations require that nutritional or health claims on food packaging must be scientifically validated and not mislead consumers.

The new complaint system simplifies the process for consumers. Users can upload front-of-pack images highlighting the questionable claims, submit the FSSAI license or registration number of the manufacturer, and include an e-commerce URL if the item is sold online. This structured submission supports FSSAI and its enforcement teams in taking swift, evidence-backed action against violators.

The initiative also complements the work of the Advertisement and Claims Monitoring Committee (AMC), which routinely examines food product labels and advertisements for compliance. By enabling real-time public participation, FSSAI aims to create a decentralized vigilance model where consumers play a central role in monitoring food safety.

The impact on food businesses is expected to be considerable. Brands will now face greater scrutiny, not only from regulators but from the public at large. Companies may need to revisit their marketing strategies, review all packaging claims for scientific accuracy, and implement stricter internal compliance checks to avoid penalties or product recalls.
