As revealed by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) on July 4, 2023, the HACCP certificate, which was delivered to applicants by mail previously, can be issued online since June 2023.1
Background information HACCP is short for “Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point”, which refers to the proactive food safety management system to prevent hazards. In South Korea, HACCP is a mandatory accreditation for local factories producing livestock foods, health functional foods, etc. Additionally, as revised in the Enforcement Rule of Imported Food Act on June 30, 20212, MFDS can also request overseas facilities to comply with the HACCP criteria when the imported products are at risk of mixing with hazardous materials. The overseas facilities manufacturing kimchi (김치, a traditional Korean dish made of salted cabbages with a mixture of seasonings) are designated as the first batch of Foreign Food Facilities(FFF) subject to HACCP. |
Enterprises can apply for HACCP certificate through the HACCP Integrated Citizen Service System3. After completing the certification application process, a confirmation number will be sent to the applicant via text message, which is essential for downloading and/or printing the HACCP Certificate online via the system. The certificate also includes a QR code to prevent tampering or alteration (as shown below).

With the online certificate issuance, the HACCP certification agency can review and reissue certificates at any time, improving work efficiency and shorting the issuance period.
