India Issues Temporary Approval for Lecithin in Follow-On Formula

On Aug. 8, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) approved the use of lecithin (as an emulsifying agent) in follow-on formula pending the release of the final standard.

In 2017, FSSAI consulted on the draft Food Safety and Standards (Foods for Infant Nutrition) Regulations, in which lecithin has been proposed as an approved additive. Given that the process of notification, commenting, representation of stakeholders, modification (if needed) and final approval takes time, FSSAI has temporarily permitted manufacturers to apply lecithin in follow-on (0.5g/100g).
