India Revises Regulations on Oils and Fats

India’s FSSAI released a revision of Food Safety Standard Law updating oils and fats regulations.
On the 20th of October 2017, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India FSSAI announced the revision of the sections 2.2.1 "Oils" and 2.2.4 "Edible Lipids" of Food Safety Standards Act (Food Standards and Food Additives).

The main updates are:

  • New standards for Virgin Coconut Oil and Peanut Butter.

  • Renaming of ‘Linseed Oil’ as ‘Flaxseed/Linseed Oil’ (to remove naming ambiguities).

  • In standards of Palm oil and Palm kernel oil, renaming of the parameter ‘Acid Value’ as ‘Free Fatty acid value (%) (expressed as Palmitic Acid)’ and ‘(expressed as Lauric Acid)’ respectively.

  • Revision of the limits of the above two values to not more than 10.0 to reflect the naturally occurring changes in the product during the time between the harvest and the reception at the oil mill.

The revision which also contains new legal requirements on other oils and fats came into force immediately on the date of notification.
