On June 17, 2022, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) released the Food Safety and Standards (Vegan Foods) Regulations, 2022 with immediate effect, which specifies the general requirements and labeling requirements for vegan food.
Vegan food means the food or food ingredients are not of animal origin. Therefore, the manufacturers should avoid the unintended presence of non-vegan substances at stages of production, processing and distribution. If the same production line is shared with non-vegan products or ingredients, cleaning or comparable measures in conformity with Good Manufacturing Practices shall be carried out before production. In addition, every vegan food or ingredient shall comply with relevant regulations in India.
In terms of labeling, apart from conforming to Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020 (except clause (b) of sub regulation (4) of regulation 5), the package of vegan food should be marked with the “vegan food logo” as below:
The import of vegan food should be attached with a certificate issued by the recognized authorities of the exporting countries in the format as specified by FSSAI.
