On Mar. 29, 2021, Japan Consumer Affairs Agency (CAA) released an amendment to “Labeling Permission Standard of Food for Special Dietary Uses”. According to the revision, products having the same property will be regarded as one type of product when it comes to the application of “comprehensive nutrition food” label. The property may involve nutrient ingredient, calorie, efficacy and etc. It is noteworthy that products whose all characteristics are the same except flavors will be regarded as one product as well.
Requirements for application:
Enterprises must prepare the examination inspection report of the “one product". To make this report, enterprises should select three batches of products randomly selected from all products to conduct experimental inspections.
Supervision:
For comprehensive nutrition foods which have obtained the labeling permission as “one product”, apart from regularly submitting the testing report issued by the third-party institutions, the enterprises also need to hand in the following two documents per year:
A document showing the sale volume;
A report on the quality control of the product;
Notably, the product reported shall be designated by the CAA.
The comprehensive nutritional foods that supplement the nutrition of the sick and the elderly belong to foods for special dietary uses. With reference to CAA regulation, enterprises shall apply for labeling permission before selling the food for special dietary uses.
