Japan Release Measures for Management of Cyanide Containing Food

Japan abolished the requirements of thorough self-inspection for food containing cyanide naturally. Cassava leaf is newly listed into the food category that requires self-inspection

On September 19, 2017, Japan MHLW issued a notification detailing the treatment measures for food containing cyanide. Thorough self-inspection for food containing cyanide naturally is not required, and following 4 points are measures to better manage food containing cyanide:

  1. Self-inspection related to cyanide is necessary for food and processed products containing cyanide naturally (excluding those requiring command inspection). If the contents of cyanide exceed 10ppm in flaxseed, almond, plum nut, bitter almond, their products are not allowed to be manufactured, sold, imported, etc. in Japan.

  2. If a product is imported as raw material of oil, and cyanide is not detected in the extracted oil, then the inspection mentioned in item 1 is not required, while it has to be confirmed that this product is strictly for oil manufacture only.

  3. Though cyanide is found exceeding 10ppm, the product is still compliant as long as cyanide in the finished product complies with relevant requirements.

  4. Cassava leaf requires self-inspection (mentioned in item 1) as well, since recently cyanide has been detected in imported cassava leaves.
