Korean Food Labeling: Significant Changes to Food Labeling Requirements Announced

On 14 Jan 2016, Korea’s MFDS updated a series of significant food labeling requirements which involve the terms and nutritional components. The amendment will take effect on 1 Jan 2017.

Terms

BeforeAfter
1 serving (1회 제공량) Deleted
1 standard serving (1회 제공기준량) 1 recommended intake (1회 섭취참고량)
Nutrient standard value (영양소 기준치) Daily nutritional component standard value (1일 영양성분 기준치)

Labeling order of nutritional components

Nutritional components would be present in the following order: sodium, carbohydrate, sugar, fat, trans-fat, saturated fat, cholesterol and protein.

Amendment to expression methods of nutritional components

As aforementioned, the unit “1 serving” and its calculation criteria will be deleted. Labeling priority will be given to the values of nutritional components of the total contents (in 1 package). Nevertheless, the value of the total contents shall be replaced by the value per 100g/ml on condition that the total contents exceed both 100g/ml and three times the 1 serving recommended intake.

Once the weight/volume exceeds a certain amount, small-sized packages shall be introduced with corresponding nutritional values. Labeling could be altered during distribution.

Calorie calculation criteria of allulose

The calculation criteria of calorie in allulose is revised into
1 g = 0 kcal

Specifications for labeling of nutritional components

Several components are issued with specifications for labeling including sugar, saturated fat and trans-fat.
