1. Malaysia’s NPRA has immediately banned the use of Mucuna pruriens as an ingredient in natural products and health supplements due to its levodopa content regulated under the Poisons Act 1952.
2. The prohibition covers all forms of Mucuna pruriens, including materials with levodopa below the detection limit, as batches cannot be guaranteed levodopa‑free.
3. Holders of registered products containing Mucuna pruriens must either reformulate and obtain new registration or withdraw their products by June 30, 2026, or face cancellation of registration.
On December 17, 2025, Malaysia's National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) issued a directive immediately prohibiting the use of Mucuna pruriens as an ingredient in natural products and health supplements. The directive, issued by the Director of Pharmaceutical Services, cites safety concerns over the plant's natural content of levodopa, a substance regulated under the Poisons Act 1952. Companies with existing registered products containing this ingredient have until June 30, 2026, to reformulate their products or withdraw their product registration approval
