MFDS Conducts Random Inspection on Protein Supplements Safety and Online Advertising

MFDS halted the importation of one protein supplement imported through cross-border e-commerce, due to the detection of anabolic steroids. Sixty-three cases involving the violation of Korea’s advertising were also publicized. The cases involved deliberately misleading consumers and misrepresenting ordinary food as health functional food.

As revealed by the MFDS report released on Dec 23rd, 2019, MFDS carried out random inspection of 195 protein supplements, including 110 domestic products, 65 imported products, and 20 CBEC products. Only one product from the CBEC channel was found noncompliant and tested positive for banned anabolic steroids.

Besides, MFDS further reviewed the online advertising of protein supplements over 2046 transaction websites. Sixty-three advertisements were found to violate the advertising regulation Standards for Prohibited Food Labeling and Advertising. Violations included misleading consumers and misrepresenting ordinary foods as health functional foods.
The enterprises involved will face administrative sanctions. Furthermore, MFDS will report them to relevant authorities.
