On 26 Nov, NHFPC released Announcement 4, 2013 to approve 8 new food raw materials according to the new measures for safety examination of novel foods (see ChemLinked news on 18 Jul), including
Euglena gracilis,
D-Fructose 1,6-diphosphate trisodium salt,
Flower of Paeonia ostii T.Hong et J.X.Zhang,
Isodon lophanthoides(Buchanan-Hamilton ex D.Don)H.Hara var. gerardianus(Bentham) H.Hara,
Amygdalus pedunculata Oil,
Swida wilsoniana Oil,
Foliage of Cyclocarya paliurus,
Mannan oligosaccharide(MOS)
Food manufacturers should use them to make food products within the applicable scope and in compliance with national standards. For instance, Euglena gracilis, Amygdalus pedunculata Oil, etc. cannot be used in foods for babies.
On 12 Nov, NHFPC issued two supporting department rules separately for registration and safety examination of new food raw materials (see ChemLinked news on 18 Nov). An additional requirement for applicants is the submission of “safety evaluation opinions”, which must be issued by specifc testing institutes. At present, only China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment (CFSA) is qualified according to a food risk assessment expert from CFSA.
