Singapore Releases Amendments to Food Regulations

On Oct. 27, 2015, Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) announced the amendments to Food Regulations 2015, which will enter into force from Dec. 30, 2015 onwards. 

The proposed amendments include:

  • Organic foods must be certified under an inspection and certification system in accordance with the Codex Guidelines for the Production, Processing, Labeling and Marketing of Organically Produced Foods before being labeled as “organic” or other equivalents.

  • The use of sweetener advantame in foods has been approved under good manufacturing practice.

  • The import, sale and advertisement of raw milk for direct human consumption has been prohibited.

  • The use of bovine lactoferrin in infant formula has been approved up to a maximum permitted level of 100mg/100ml.

  • The use of specific modified starches has been allowed, including:

Dextrin roasted starch, Acid-treated starch, Alkaline-treated starch, Bleached starch, Oxidised starch, Enzyme-treated starch, Monostarch phosphate, Distarch phosphate, Phosphated distarch phosphate, Acetylated distarch phosphate, Starch acetate, Acetylated distarch adipate, Hydroxypropyl starch, Hydroxypropyl distarch phosphate, Starch sodium octenyl succinate, Acetylated oxidised starch
