South Korea Consults on Health Functional Food Regulations

New functional claims for ginseng and hyaluronic acid have been added.

In accordance with the Notice No. 2019-317 [1], MFDS intends to revise the Standard and Specification of Health Functional Food on June 26th, 2019. Here are the main revisions.

Main Content

  • Due to the revision of Food Additive Standard and Rules [2], MFDS now permits the use of 5-MTHF-glucosamine ((6S)-5-Methyltetrahydrofolic Acid, Glucosamine Salt) as the ingredient for making folic acid.

  • Newly added functional claims for ginseng and hyaluronic acid

Ginseng can help improve bone health; and hyaluronic acid can help maintain skin health and help protect skin against ultraviolet radiation (daily intake 240 mg).
  • The daily intake of bilberry extract was revised

Beforebilberry extract 240mg (anthocyanosides 72~108mg)
Afterbilberry extract 160~240mg (anthocyanosides 50~108mg)
  • Revise the specification of green tea extract

(-)-epigallocathrchin gallate, EGCG will be managed according to the EGCG content in finished products. Revise the specification of green tea extract
  • Revise the testing method of 8 functional ingredients

They are vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin B1, chondroitin sulfate, batyl alcohol, anthraquinones, total flavonoid and phosphatidylserine.
  • Newly added the simultaneous analysis method of vitamin A and vitamin E as well as the testing method for 5-MTHF.
