South Korea Targets China's E-Commerce Markets

On 3 Dec, the food department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) stated they will meet representatives from China’s e-commerce giants including Alibaba (the owner of Taobao and Tmall) and Yi Haodian to discuss increasing online sales of Korean agricultural food products in China.

In 2013 the scale of China’s on-line market amounted to CNY1850 billion and the figure is set for steady year on year growth. In addition to cooperating with Yi Haodian, In Oct this year, MAFRA also set up an agricultural food product specialty store on Alibaba. The sales volume from Oct to now has exceeded CNY 10 million.

Due to the geographic condition, more and more overseas food companies especially those SMEs who may not be up to build an extensive sales network in China could consider bringing their products to Chinese consumers through e-platforms.
