South Korea Expands GMO Labeling Scope and Clarifies Non-GMO Claim Standards

The amended Food Sanitation Act expands mandatory GMO labeling scope to include designated highly processed foods and establishes legal standards for Non-GMO marketing claims.

On December 30, 2025, the South Korea Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced a significant amendment to the Food Sanitation Act. The amendment fundamentally shifts the GMO labeling paradigm by removing exemptions for designated highly processed foods where genetic material is not detectable, and establishes rigorous legal definitions for "Non-GMO" marketing claims.
