Korea to Expand GMO Labeling Scope to Foods and Functional Foods

On Dec. 31, 2015, the draft of Amendments to the Food Sanitation Law and Health Functional Food Act was passed by the South Korean Parliament, which was revised to expand the GMO labeling scope to foods and functional foods.

In the past, only GMO ingredients in products used as one of the 5 major ingredients ranked by concentration required labeling.

After the draft regulation is formally implemented, all the GMO ingredients used during the production or processing of foods or health functional foods shall be labeled regardless of concentration, expect for the edible oil and soybean sauce without GMO DNA or protein residues after production or processing.
