On November 26, 2024, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) announced that the Real-Time Food Information Service (Food QR) officially launched. This service will allow consumers to easily access various food safety information via their smartphones.
What is Food QR
Food QR is an information delivery system embedded with product-specific identification codes and internet links, offering real-time details such as labeling information, recall notices, and more.
Benefits for Consumers
Currently, consumers must rely on printed information on food packaging to check product details, such as ingredients or expiration dates. However, limited space on packaging often makes it challenging to find other desired information. To address this, the MFDS has been running a pilot program since September 2022. By simply scanning the Food QR code on product packaging with a smartphone camera, consumers can instantly access a wide range of information, including:
Safety Information: labeling, recall notices, and allergen details.
Health Information: ingredients and nutritional content.
Lifestyle Information: preparation methods, cooking tips
Accessibility Features
Food QR is designed to be inclusive:
Elderly users can enlarge small text for better readability.
People with visual or hearing impairments can access features such as avatar sign language videos, Braille conversion, and voice-to-text apps for summarized information.
Expansion Plans
In 2024, QR codes will be rolled out for domestic processed foods.
In 2025, the program will expand to imported foods.
In 2026, it will cover domestic agricultural, livestock, and fishery products.
