South Korea Revises Food Code

Korea Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) announced revision of Food Ingredient List, the classification of food ingredients, sanitary indicators, etc. in an official notice published on Oct. 12, 2018. Major changes are:

Classification of food ingredients (article 1.4.1)

  • Add missing categories of food ingredients of plant origin to align with Codex

Sanitary requirements (article 2.3.4 / 2.3.5 / 4.12.12~4.12.25)

  • Set standard for indicator organisms for general sanitation that is applicable to all sterilized food products;

  • Clarify the limits of poisonous fungi in aquatic products that can be eaten raw;

  • Revise limit of coliform in non-sterilized products under the category of sauce;

  • Expand the application scope of standard for total aflatoxin (B1, B2, G1 and G2)and aflatoxin B1 limit to all ingredients of plant origin and processed foods;

Pesticide MRL (article 2.3.7 / attached table 4 and 6)

  • Revise maximum residue limit (MRL) of 6-BA (6-Benzyl aminopurine) from “0.1mg/kg” to “0.2mg/kg”;

  • Set MRLs for 118 pesticides including deltamethrin and clopyralid in food; and add new experiment method for determination of clopyralid;

  • Revise MRL of pirimiphos-methyl in the eggs of livestock and aquatic animal from “0.05ppm” to “0.01ppm”;

Specifications of candy (article 4.1.3 & 4.1.5)

  • Set standards for total acid in candy and for GMP of candy;

List of Food Ingredients (attached table 1)

  • Add 6 aquatic products to the List of Food Ingredients, they are: northern propeller clam, goldstripe sardinella, patagonian scallop, patagonian squid, peruvian calico scallop, scarlet shrimp.
