Taiwan Amends Regulations on Nutrition Labeling for Prepackaged Food Products

According to an official notice, Taiwan revises Regulations on Nutrition Labeling for Prepackaged Food Products on June 23, 2022. The amendments will come into effect on July 1, 2024.

Major Revisions

1. Permitting more units for labeling the specification of products

Before the amendment, products are only allowed to be labeled with “XX gram or milliliter per serving” and “containing xx servings in this package”. After the revision, products can be labeled with “XX tablets or capsules per serving”.

2. Detailing the nutrition labeling unit

It is clarified that prepackaged food (excluding candies) in tablet or capsule form shall be expressed in gram, tablet or capsule. Amino acids can be expressed in grams (g), which was only allowed to be labeled in milligrams (mg) previously. Moreover, for products that require reconstitution with water for consumption, it is added that if products have nutrition claims, the measurement standard unit of the nutrition claim shall be the basis for the application of this regulation.

3. The condition for zero labeling is detailed.

According to the notice, content of protein, fats or carbohydrate shall not be labeled as “0” if their subcategory nutrients are not labeled as “0”. Energy can be labeled as “0” when its content in food product does not exceed 4 Kcal, and at the same time the content of carbohydrates, sugars, proteins, fats, trans fats, and saturated fats all meet the corresponding requirements for “0” labeling.

4. Notes are added for “Appendix 2 Conditions for “0” labeling of Caloric and Nutrient Value”.

  • When Infant formula or follow-up infant formula uses 100 grams (or kilocalories) and 100 milliliters for nutrition labeling, the calorie and the content of protein, fat, carbohydrate, sodium, saturated fat, trans fat, and sugars may be labeled as “0” if their content in both 100 grams (or kilocalories) and 100 milliliters meet the criteria in Appendix 2.

  • Conditions for “0” labeling of caloric and nutrients value do not apply to the allowable error range for labeled nutrition values stipulated in Article 10.
