Taiwan Consults on Draft Ban on PHOs

On 22 Feb 2016, Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) proposed the draft regulation “Prohibition of the Use of Edible Hydrogenated Oils”. Once finalized, the ban shall come into force on 1 Jul 2018.

According to Article 15 of the “Act Governing Food Safety and Sanitation”, partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs) which are the main source of artificial trans-fat shall not be used in food. Comments are invited to be submitted in 2 weeks.

The draft proposal is released in tune with the increasing public awareness of the detrimental effects of PHOs in human bodies. The move mirrors the US official ban on PHOs in food (subject to 3 year grace period).
