Taiwan Updated Food Labeling Requirements

Coffee, tea and other herbaceous plants for brewing are exempted from nutrition labeling in Taiwan. Manufacturers are voluntarily required to indicate detailed information like calorie and ingredients/composition for wine products.

On Mar. 14, 2018, Taiwan FDA announced the revision of nutrition labeling requirements for prepackaged food. 2 items are newly listed in food exempted from nutrition labeling in Taiwan, which are:

  • Tea, coffee, dried bean, barley and other herbaceous plants as well as their flowers and seeds which are used for brewing, and without other raw materials or food additives

  • Foods whose calories and nutrient contents can be indicated as “0” based on “Rules of Nutrition Labeling for Prepackaged Food”.

In Taiwan, prepackaged foods without nutrition claims are exempted from nutrition labeling. Apart from those 2 new items mentioned, the exemption also covers following food categories:

  • Drinking water, mineral water, ice cube

  • Fresh or frozen fruit, vegetables, livestock, poultry, egg, liquid egg, and aquatic products without any other ingredients

  • Spice

  • Salt and salt replacement

On Mar. 9, Taiwan Ministry of Finance issued a letter that wine manufacturers shall voluntarily indicate components, calorie and sugar content on wine products or websites.
