Thailand Updates the Criteria for Labeling “Healthier Choice” Nutritional Logo

The competent authority revised the nutrition criteria for the “healthier choice” logo on beverage products, and introduced new criteria for some instant food and alternative milk products.

On January 3, 2025, Thailand Food and Drug Administration (Thai FDA) announced the amendments to the nutritional criteria for “healthier choice” logo on beverage, seasoning, instant food and alternative milk products. The changes took effect immediately upon promulgation, while previously certified products previously are allowed to be sold within 24 months of the effective date.

Details of the amendments are as follows:

Revision to the nutrition criteria of “healthier choice” logo in beverage products

The total sugar contents for beverage products except 100% vegetable /fruit juice are reduced from “6 g/100mL; 18 g/serving” to “5 g/100mL; 15 g/serving”. In addition, the total energy of vegetable/fruit juice, soft drinks, flavored sweet drinks and ready-to-drink tea are lowered from 24 kcal/100mL to 20 kcal/100mL in case the formula contains sugar and sugar substitute.

Note: The beverage products listed in the announcement include:

  • 100% vegetable/fruit juice

  • vegetable/fruit juice, soft drinks, flavored sweet drinks

  • cereal drinks, soy milk

  • chocolate drinks, cocoa, malt extract and drinks containing milk or protein

  • ready-to-drink tea

  • instant coffee

Clarification of nutrition criteria in seasoning products

At present there are nutrition criteria for 11 types of seasoning products, such as fish sauce, soy sauce and oyster sauce. In the latest amendment, the notes added clarifies that the scope is not limited to those listed but also include products having similar consumption characteristics and patterns. Moreover, these established nutrient criteria apply to seasonings in ready-to-consume condition. For concentrated seasonings that need to be dissolved or diluted to be ready for consumption according to label instructions, these criteria can then be referenced.

The "Healthier Choice" logo identifies products with superior nutritional profiles within their category. While its use is voluntary, products displaying the logo must meet the corresponding nutritional criteria. Manufacturers seeking to use the logo must submit nutritional analysis results and relevant documentation to the "Healthier Choice Nutritional Logo Certifying Unit."
