In Japan, Consumer Affairs Agency regulates the use of food additives to ensure food safety and protect consumer health. The Specifications and Standards for Foods, Food Additives, etc. specify permitted additives, their usage limits, and applicable food categories. Before approval, additives undergo safety evaluations by the Food Safety Commission. Only those deemed safe are permitted, with specifications and usage limits set. Under the Food Sanitation Act, only designated additives can be used in principle, along with existing additives, natural flavorings, and certain food-based additives.
