Updates Collection: South Korea Food Regulation Updates in October

New Revisions

Food additives derived from microorganisms such as yeasts require submission of relevant documents about the microorganism for safety review. It also revised some terminologies. (Notice Date: Oct. 11)
Revision of some residue standards. (Oct. 16)
Stop importation from overseas manufacturing facilities that rejected or evaded onsite inspection. The new revision applies not only to those that passed the registration but also those that are applying for the registration. The new revision came into effect on Oct 24, 2019. (Oct. 24)
It includes the standards and specification of feed, inspection standards of feed, follow-up management standards of imported feed, HACCP standards, etc. (Oct. 24)
Enterprises shall avoid using relevant prohibited food labeling and advertising claims, or business licenses and registrations may be revoked. The new regulation came into force on October 29th, 2019. (Oct. 29)
These regulations mainly deleted the repetitive parts which were already included in the Food Labeling and Advertising Code. Legal foundations are also reformed. (Oct. 29; Oct. 30)

Consultation Draft

Registration requirements and standards for specific livestock products are further detailed. Opinions shall be submitted prior to Nov. 19, 2019.
It revises registration requirements, rules on animal fertilization experiments, etc. Opinions shall be submitted prior to Nov. 26, 2019.
Mainly administrative revisions to the review committee. Opinions shall be submitted prior to Dec 3, 2019.
It enlarges the conditions when HACCP authentication will be canceled. Opinions shall be submitted prior to Dec 3, 2019.
When products contain more than 4 nutrients/functional ingredients, the name of these ingredients can be marked in bold. Opinions shall be submitted prior to Nov 25, 2019.
Revision of Food for Special Medical Purposes (FSMP) food labeling, etc. Opinions shall be submitted prior to Nov 25, 2019.

Released Guidelines

The National Institute of Food and Drug Safety Evaluation (NIFDS) released the guideline on October 1st. This guideline includes the overview, risk assessment system, methods, related regulations, etc. and applies to cosmetics, food, medicines, medical devices, etc.
It includes relevant regulations, reporting methods, investigation methods of foreign matters and QA session. (Oct. 11)
The revisions are mainly related to the food used in hotels or restaurants. (Oct. 15)
