How to Cope with the Updated GB Standard for Pathogen Limit in Prepackaged Foods (GB 29921-2021)

Updated GB Standard for Pathogen Limit in Prepackaged Foods (GB 29921-2021) has come into force on Nov. 22, 2021. Stakeholders should pay attention to major revisions brought by the new standard.

On Nov. 22, 2021, the updated GB standard for pathogen limit in prepackaged foods (GB 29921-2021) began to take effect. Compared with the old version (GB 29921-2013), several major revisions are made in the new version, which brings significant effect on food manufacturers. ChemLinked summarizes the new rules and changes, and provides suggestions for stakeholders to better adapt the updated version.

Critical Revisions in the New Version

  • Revision of the standard name, from Maximum Residue Limit of Pathogens in Food to Maximum Residue Limit of Pathogens in Prepackaged Food (GB 31607-2021 Pathogen Limit in Bulk Ready-to-eat Foods, was released at the same time. The new standard will be effective from Mar. 7, 2022)

  • Addition of the maximum level of pathogens in dairy products and special dietary food

  • Addition of Annex A-Description of Food Category (Name) for Product classification

  • Revision of test items for five major food categories

Noteworthy Points for Stakeholders

As a significant part of risk management, the control over pathogen limit in food shall always be emphasized. Despite some food categories are not listed in this standard, food enterprises still need to check the food ingredients they use, to ensure there's no violation of pathogen limit in food ingredients. The following points should be especially noted:

  • GB 29921-2021 has taken effect on Nov. 22, 2021, while GB 31607-2021 will be effective from Mar. 7, 2022. Food products produced after the implementation dates shall conform to the new standards.

  • For dairy and special dietary food, in addition to their corresponding product standards, they also have to meet the pathogen limit specified in GB 29921-2021.

  • For manufacturer and operation enterprise of aquatic products, RTE fruit/vegetable products and frozen drinks, attention needs to be paid to the pollution risk and over-limit risk of Listeria monocytogenes.
