Following the issuance of the list of China CNCA-approved overseas infant formula manufacturers, AQSIQ promulgated the first batch of importers and bands of imported infant formula on 29 May and updated it on 3 June. Currently, there are 95 importers permitted to import a total of 127 infant formula brands from overseas. The majority of these manufacturers are OEM brands. On the domestic front mainland Chinese infant formula producers are totally banned from OEM activities. AQSIQ just lists names of importers and corresponding brands so it is impossible to link brands with approved manufacturers.
According to the AQSIQ statement, the information of importers and brands will be updated whenever any new changes occur. An industry insider revealed that about 300 more brands are waiting in line but not all of them will be lucky enough to be approved for export to China. From May 1st 2014, only recognized brands made by approved manufacturers (46 ones approved updated until 27 May 2014) can be imported and placed on the Chinese market. Exporters or owners of new infant formula brands still have the chance to export their products to China as long as the Chinese regulatory requirements are met.
