On April 7, 2025, the State Administration of Customs Tariff announced that starting from 12:01 PM on April 10, 2025, a 34% tariff will be imposed on all imported goods originating from the United States. This decision comes in response to the U.S. government's announcement of "reciprocal tariffs" on Chinese goods on April 2, 2025.
The key points of the newly announced regulations include a 34% increase in tariffs on all U.S.-origin imported goods, applied on top of the existing tariff rates. The current bonded and tax exemption policies remain unchanged, and the additional tariffs will not be subject to any deductions. Additionally, goods that have already been shipped from the origin and imported between April 10, 2025, at 12:01 PM, and May 13, 2025, at 11:59 PM, will not be subject to the additional tariffs outlined in this announcement.
The Chinese government also urges the U.S. government to immediately cancel the unilateral tariff measures and to resolve trade disputes through consultations in an equal, respectful, and reciprocal manner.
Previous Round of Tariff Measures
This latest development follows a prior escalation in tariff actions. On March 4, 2025, the Chinese government announced tariffs ranging from 10% to 15% on selected U.S. agricultural imports, effective March 10, 2025. The move, outlined in a public notice by the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council, was a response to the U.S. government's decision to impose an additional 10% tariff on all Chinese exports to the United States, citing concerns over fentanyl-related issues.
