Permitted food raw materials in China can be divided into two types: conventional food raw materials and new food raw materials approved by National Health Commission (NHC). This article tracks and collects the updates on China novel food raw materials in 2023, including newly approved and newly proposed ones.
On December 22, 2023, China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment (CFSA) opened two novel food raw materials for public comments. They are L-alpha-Glycerylphosphorylcholine and Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides. Comments can be sent to [email protected] before January 22, 2024. Details are as follows:

Notably, Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides has already been approved as a novel food raw material in March 2023. This notice aims to expand the use scope to cream, butter and anhydrous butter. Food safety indicators of this raw material should comply with the provisions for food processing bacterial preparations once the GB standard for food processing bacterial preparations is released.
On November 30, 2023, China National Health Commission (NHC) authorized the use of three new food raw materials. Details are as follows:
