[Updated] China Novel Food Raw Materials in 2023: CFSA Consults on Two Food Raw Materials, Including a Probiotic Strain

Latest update: On December 22, 2023, China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment (CFSA) opened two novel food raw materials for public comments. They are L-alpha-Glycerylphosphorylcholine and Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides.

Permitted food raw materials in China can be divided into two types: conventional food raw materials and new food raw materials approved by National Health Commission (NHC). This article tracks and collects the updates on China novel food raw materials in 2023, including newly approved and newly proposed ones.

Latest Update: December 22, 2023 [Consultation Draft]

On December 22, 2023, China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment (CFSA) opened two novel food raw materials for public comments. They are L-alpha-Glycerylphosphorylcholine and Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides. Comments can be sent to [email protected] before January 22, 2024. Details are as follows:

1. Infants and young children, pregnant and lactating women should avoid taking foods containing this raw material. The unsuitable group and the consumption limit should be marked on labels and instructions.

Food safety indicators shall comply with the followings:

Lead (Pb, dry basis), mg/kg≤1.0;

Total arsenic (As, dry basis), mg/kg≤1.5;

Salmonella, /25g(mL): 0;

Staphylococcus aureus, /25g(mL): 0;

Listeria monocytogenes, /25g(mL): 0

1. It is approved to be listed in Bacterial Cultures Permitted in Food. The application scope includes fermented milk, flavored fermented milk, cheese, fermented milk beverage and lactobacillus beverage (non-solid beverage), cream, butter and anhydrous butter, excluding infant food.

Notably, Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides has already been approved as a novel food raw material in March 2023. This notice aims to expand the use scope to cream, butter and anhydrous butter. Food safety indicators of this raw material should comply with the provisions for food processing bacterial preparations once the GB standard for food processing bacterial preparations is released.
