China Revamps FSMP Framework with Updated General Principles and New Standard for Tumor Nutrition

On September 25, 2025, China's National Health Commission (NHC) and the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) jointly announced the release of 32 new national food safety standards. Among them, two standards signal a major overhaul of the regulatory landscape for Foods for Special Medical Purposes (FSMP), impacting manufacturers, importers, and developers in this specialized sector.

The key releases are:

• GB 29922-2025 General Principles for Foods for Special Medical Purposes, which will replace the current GB 29922-2013, with effect from September 2, 2027.

• GB 31662-2025 Nutritionally Complete Foods for Tumors, a new standard creating a dedicated category for tumor nutrition, with effect from September 2, 2026.
