On September 25, 2025, China's National Health Commission (NHC) and the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) jointly released the GB 2762-2025 Maximum Levels of Contaminants in Foods. The standard updates GB 2762-2022 and its No.1 Amendment Sheet, involving packaged drinking water and dried meat products. The new standard will take effect on September 2, 2026.
Key Revisions
1. Packaged Drinking Water
The GB 2762-2025 aligns the nitrite limit for packaged drinking water (excluding natural mineral water) with that of natural mineral water, setting the maximum level at 0.1 mg/L. This remains among the world's most stringent requirements, 5 to 30 times stricter than those in Europe, the U.S., and international benchmarks.
The adjustment is intended not only to safeguard public health but also to reduce excessive purification processes, lower energy consumption, and support the sustainable development of the packaged drinking water sector.
2. Dried Meat Products
To enhance the standard's practicality, this revision clarifies heavy metal limits for dried meat products, addressing long-standing challenges in regulatory inspections where dehydration rates were difficult to obtain and calculation methods varied. Consequently, "cooked dried meat products" has been added to the food category descriptions in Appendix A.
Notably, related editorial changes were made in Table 10, but these do not affect the existing maximum level of 3.0 µg/kg for N-dimethyl nitrosamine in cooked dried meat products.
