China Solicits Public Comments on 7 New Food Additives

China proposed to expand the application scope of sodium alginate to foods for special medical purposes (limited to amino acid metabolism disorder formula food) designed for people aged from 13 months to 10 years old. The application scope of 6S-5-methyltetrahydrofolate calcium is expanded to nutrient supplementary food for pregnant and lactating women and sports nutrition food.

As revealed by the CFSA Notice released on September 27, 2020 [1], China is consulting on the use of seven new ingredients, including two new varieties of enzymes, four new food additives and one food nutritional fortifier. Opinions should be sent to zqyj@cfsa.net.cn prior to October 23, 2020.

It shall conform to the requirements of   folic acid specified in GB 31601-2015 National Food Safety Standard Nutrient Supplementary Food for Pregnant and Lactating Women [7] and GB 24154-2015 National Food Safety Standard General Standard for Sports Nutrition Food [8].

It can be used as the compound source of folic acid. The quality specification shall conform to Official Notice No. 2017-13 [9] released by the former National   Health and Family Planning Commission.
