Custom Rejection Info for Imported Food in September 2020

Two batches of DHA algae oil capsules and a batch of fish oil milk tablet from Australia failed custom clearance in September. Three batches of whey protein powder products were rejected for exceeding the limitations on total bacterial colony numbers and overuse of food additives.

On Oct 21, 2020, China GAC released the list of non-compliant food products in Sep. 2020[1] A total of 218 batches of imported food from 36 countries/regions were rejected in September. 

Regarding the country of origin, the largest proportion of non-compliant imported food in September came from Ecuador (18.3%), followed by Japan (12.8%) and Indonesia (6.8%). As for food category, 30.7% were aquatic products, most of which were frozen shrimps. Animal epidemic disease detected accounted for 23.7% of all rejections in September.

Noteworthy Products

1. Solid beverages: 10 batches of solid beverages failed custom clearance in September, among which 1 batch of probiotics solid beverage was rejected for non-food-additive substance sodium hyaluronate detected, and 2 batches of whey protein powder solid beverages were rejected for exceeding the limitations on total bacterial colony numbers.

2. Dairy products: Except for whey protein powder solid beverages mention above, there was another batch of whey protein powder from Belgium in the non-compliant list, failed for overuse of food additives, and a batch of fish oil milk tablet from Australia rejected for overuse of nutritional fortification substances.

3. Health food: 2 batches of DHA algae oil capsules from Australia failed for lack of required documentation.

4. Baby food: 1 batch of multigrain powder (infant and young children complementary food) from Belgium was rejected for unqualified calcium content.
