France Suspends Imports of Non-EU Foods Containing Banned Pesticide Residues

1. France has imposed a one‑year suspension on importing and marketing in France certain food products from non‑EU countries if they contain quantifiable residues of specified banned phytopharmaceutical substances. 2. The Order covers a wide range of fruits, vegetables and grains linked to carbendazim/benomyl, glufosinate, thiophanate‑methyl and mancozeb, and applies from January 8, 2026 with limited transitional relief. 3. Food business operators must implement robust due‑diligence measures, including origin checks, supplier guarantees and laboratory testing, to demonstrate the absence of quantifiable residues of these substances.

On January 7, 2026, French authorities published an Order dated January 5, 2026, in the Official Journal (JORF), officially suspending the importation, introduction, and placing on the market of specific food products originating from countries outside the European Union. This regulatory action targets food commodities containing quantifiable residues of certain phytopharmaceutical active substances that are currently banned within the EU. The Order entered into force on January 8, 2026, with a transitional provision exempting goods acquired by importers or market operators before February 8, 2026.
