GAC Publicizes Jan 2019 Non-Compliance Data

On Feb. 28, 2019, GAC released information on non-compliant imported food in January[1]. Data shows that 95 batches of food products imported from 23 countries/regions had issues. Major categories of food rejected include beverages, cereal-based food, and aquatic products.

50% of Rejected Beverages Failed to Comply with Nutritional Fortification Standards

12/24 of the batches of non-compliant beverages (solid drink excluded) were flavor drinks containing minerals and vitamins imported from Taiwan. They contained mineral and vitamin fortification substances in concentrations exceeding maximum limits[2]. Unpermitted food additives were detected in 11 batches, such as titanium dioxide, acesulfame potassium and sulfur dioxide[3].

Hygienic Issues Constituted Biggest Problem for Cereal-Based Snacks

Cereal-based snack were associated with frequent expiration data, hygiene and additives use issues.

Aquatic Products without Quarantine Approval Were Banned

5 batches of aquatic products were rejected due to lack of quarantine approval. According to China Food Safety Law[4], specific categories of imported foods (meat, aquatic products, dairy products, traditional Chinese medicine, bird nest, honey, food of plant origin) are subject to limitations as specified in the China Approved Imported Foods and Corresponding Countries of Origin[5].
