The Fermented Alcoholic Beverages and their Integrated Alcoholic Beverages (GB2758-2012) will replace the previous standard GB2758-2005 and will fully come into force on August 1st 2013. The new standard scope will encompass all fermented or partially fermented alcoholic products such as fermented wine, fermented grains (beers),fermented fruits products(except wine), brewed liquor, dairy derived alcoholic products etc.
The most significant changes to the news standards are a modification of permissible lead content, modification of permissible microbial content. Labeling requirements will also change and producers will now be required to list alcohol content as percentage of total volume. Percentage of precursor content for will also be required, for example labeling requirements for fruit derived products (other than wine) are now mandated to bear the original fruit juice content as a percentage of the total volume (x/x%). Beer labeling requirements are also set for change with beers now requiring labeling with a percentage of original wort concentration and expressed as a value using the Plato Scale (°P).
Health warnings are now also required and products falling under the scope of GB2758-2012 should bear the disclaimer “Excessive alcohol consumption is harmful to health.” Carbonated products in glass bottles should also bear safety warnings relating to the safe handling of glass and the risk of explosion if mishandled. Wines and other alcoholic strength greater than or equal to 10% vol and preparations of fermented wine may be exempted from labeling shelf life.
