Recently, CFDA conducted investigations on a number of health food enterprises using unqualified ginkgo biloba extract in their products and subsequently publically listed all the companies involved in these activities. Many well-known health food enterprises are involved in this issue, including By-Health, Infinitus, NU SKIN, etc.
Under the current regulatory framework there are no national standards for the majority of health food plant extracts compounded by a lack of standards for production techniques, raw material extraction, ingredients matching, etc., making the quality of these substances hard to measure.
Professor Jin Zonglian, an expert for China health food technical review indicates that CFDA is preparing to formulate relevant national standards for plant extracts to further regulate this industry. In the meantime, the catalogue for permitted health food raw materials will also be published after the formal implementation of new Food Safety Law on Oct. 1, 2015, which will become the authoritative reference for health food plant extracts.
