India to Revise Fruit Beverage Labeling Requirements

On Jun. 21, 2016, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) notified WTO of the revision of “Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011” relating to carbonated fruit beverages, which will be open to comments from WTO members for 60 days.

The content of fruit juice shall be labeled in case it is classified as carbonated beverage with fruit juice in India.

On Jun. 21, 2016, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) notified WTO of the revision of “Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011” relating to carbonated fruit beverages, which will be open to comments from WTO members for 60 days.

It is stipulated in the draft regulation that in case the content of fruit juice is below 10.0 percent but not less than 5.0 percent (2.5 percent in case of lime or lemon), the product shall be called “carbonated beverage with fruit juice” and in such cases the requirement of total soluble solids shall not apply, and the content of fruit juice shall be declared on the label.
