Japan Approves New Countries/Regions for Meat Import

Only meat products imported from countries, regions, or facilities designated by Japan MHLW can be sold in Japan from June 1, 2021. On May 26, 36 countries/regions newly granted meat exportation approval to Japan.

On May 26, 2021, MHLW newly added 36 countries, regions (marked in red) to the list of designated countries/regions.1 The details are shown in the following table:

According to the Food Sanitation Law Article, 11-(1), in order to prevent food sanitation hazards, the imported livestock and poultry meat and organs (hereinafter"meat products") are required to be produced and processed under Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) system. Therefore, only meat products imported from countries, regions, or facilities designated by the MHLW with HACCP system are allowed to be sold in Japan. This regulation came into effect on June 1st, 20212.
