Japan Revises GMO Food Labeling Requirements

From 2023 Japan will impose more stringent requirements for food products using “free from GMO” (or synonymous terminology) labeling claims.

On Apr. 25, 2019, Japan Consumer Affairs Agency announced the amendment to “food labeling standard”, detailing new labeling requirements for genetically modified food products.

Under the new requirements, which will be implemented on April 1st 2023, the use of “free from GMO” labeling claims will be restricted to foods which test free from GMO materials. In addition new labeling requirements will be imposed in cases where there is the possibility of cross contamination involving a processing facility or manufacturing lines which deals in both GMO and non-GMO foods or if the concentration of GMO materials is less than 5%.
