On May 26, 2015, the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) released the draft of Special Rules for Food Safety Administration, which will be open for public consultation for 42 days after the announcement.
A business registration system will be established for overseas manufacturers exporting food products to Korea. There will be designated overseas hygienic evaluation institutes to improve the efficiency of on-site inspection.
Overseas food enterprises and imported products will be classified according to their import history and subject to individualized management.
Traceability systems previously only required for imported functional foods will be further expanded to include livestock. Mandatory inspection of functional foods and livestock will be implemented to increase the responsibilities of food importers.
