Korea to Revise Testing Methods for Functional Foods

On Feb. 5, 2016, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety of Korea (MFDS) preannounced the revision of “Code for Health Functional Foods”, which will be open for public consultation until Mar. 4, 2016.

The main changes are as follows:

1. The testing methods for vitamin C, astaxanthin, and ginsenoside have been added, and the testing methods for coenzyme Q10, lactobacillus and lactococcus, bifidobacterium, and flavonoid glycosides have been revised.

2. The measurement unit and analytical device used for testing and quantification of ethyl acetate, vitamin A, niacin, folic acid, vitamin B12, and vitamin C have been designated.

3. Clauses regarding raw material distribution system and product sub-packaging for health functional foods have been deleted as there have already been relevant regulations formulated in higher level laws.

4. Relevant clauses regarding important notes for functional food traders have been added.
