Korea to Simplify Functional Ingredient Certification Requirements

MFDS proposed to simplify the certification materials, and only require data at essential production stages (such as extraction, filtration, concentration, etc.)

No 2018-291 announcement issued by MFDS on Jul. 6, 2018 outlines Korea’s proposition to amend the material items for functional ingredient certification. The documents to be submitted are much more simplified and definite.

1. Material simplification

As the current requirements are too stringent, MFDS intends to simplify requirements by mandating that only the documents for major production stages are required, such as the process of extraction, filtration and concentration (currently applicant needs to submit materials at each production stage).

2. More definite scope

MFDS will clearly define the conditions on substantiating food intake, ADI (acceptable daily intake) evaluation document, and toxicological testing report.

3. Amendment to materials inspection

The inspection procedure needs to be further optimized as currently some applications are not eligible, or the credibility of the supporting data/literature is questionable. False information will be rejected and human testing reports will be required if necessary.
