Korea to Expand Functional Food Ingredient Scope

On Mar. 24, 2016, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety of Korea (MFDS) announced the revision of “Code for Health Functional Food”, which expands the scope for functional ingredients of health functional food. The public consultation will end on Apr. 23, 2016.

On Mar. 24, 2016, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety of Korea (MFDS) announced the revision of “Code for Health Functional Food”, which expands the scope for functional ingredients of health functional food. The public consultation will end on Apr. 23, 2016.

Under the new regulation, 8 functional ingredients have been added into the approved health functional food ingredients directory with specified standards and specifications, including raffinose, agar powder, creatine, lactalbumin hydrolysate, phellinus linteus, tomato extract, konjac potato extract, and jujube extract.

The experimental methods of 7 functional ingredients have been newly established, including dicyandiamide, dihydrotriazine, creatine monohydrate, α S1-casein (f91-100), lycopene, ceramide oligosaccharide, and quercetin. The experimental methods of phospholipids (as acetone insoluble matter) and γ-PGA have been revised to improve the analytic result.
